Elspeth studied chemistry and patent law at the University of Manchester covering the full range of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry including photochemistry, hetrocyclic synthesis and ligand design in co-ordination chemistry. Elspeth's individual project concerned the effect of molecular weight of polymers on the formation of ink drops in printing.

Elspeth's experience includes working in house in the patents department of Unilever Plc, attending oral proceedings at the European Patent Office both at first instance and appeal, drafting and prosecution of US, UK, European and International patent applications in the fields of organic and inorganic chemistry. Elspeth has also prepared reports for litigation in central and Eastern European countries including the Czech Republic, Russia and Hungary, and has travelled in central Europe to settle patent infringement and product clearance issues.
Elspeth's day to day case work involves the full range of intellectual property including designs, copyright, patents and trade marks. In addition to Elspeths specialist fields of chemistry and biochemistry patents, her general case work includes consumer products, simple mechanical inventions, UK and foreign trade marks, design right and unregistered Community designs.
