Martin joined Franks & Co in 1999 and handles all chemical related patent matters including organic, inorganic, physical and polymer chemistry, and has wide experience with mechanical and electrical subject matter.
Martin left Franks & Co to join one of the larger UK firms of Patent and Trade Mark Attorneys, and returned to us in 2006 to take up an appointment as a Director of Franks & Co.
Technical
Martin obtained his BSc Honours degree at the University of Sheffield followed by three years of research in the field of Physical Chemistry leading to his PhD at the University of Sheffield.
Martin has commercial product research experience at ICI Technology in addition to leading research teams at various large-scale European research facilities including the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories, Oxford; Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Berlin; Institute Laue Langervin, Grenoble and Daresbury Laboratory, Cheshire. He has published various scientific publications in the field of chemistry and chemical physics.
Professional
Martin is a representative before the UK Patent Office, UK Trade Marks Registry, UK Designs Registry, the European Patent Office, the Community Trade Marks and Designs Office, and the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).
He drafts, files and prosecutes UK, European and International applications for clients including UK and overseas universities and a leading home appliance manufacturer. He is also experienced with contentious patent issues advising clients on patent infringement and validity issues.
Martin also has general experience in the areas of fuel containers, building products, aerospace engineering, agriculture, power generation, heating devices, metals & alloys and consumer products.
Martin's trade mark experience involves managing the worldwide trade marks portfolios for several medium sized companies including an animal foodstuff supplier, a bathroom products manufacturer, and a leading domestic tools manufacturer.
Martin is also active in the securing and enforcement of registered and unregistered design rights, in the UK, and abroad. He also handles contentious and non-contentious copyright matters.
Martin is a member of the Royal Society for Chemistry (MRSC).
