Iain originally joined Franks & Co in 1997, having previously worked in engineering research and development at Imperial College London and closely followed by his entry into the intellectual property (IP) profession in the IP department of a large international firm of solicitors and subsequently for a firm of Patent Attorneys.

At the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sheffield, Iain specialised in radio astronomy and instrumentation and undertook subsidiary subjects in computing and computational mathematics. Following his BSc degree he then obtained his MSc in Radiation Physics at the University of St Andrews in Scotland which comprised research in medical physics and clinical engineering at a Regional Medical Physics Department of the National Health Service (NHS). Iain later acquired a Postgraduate Diploma in Computing from the University of Bradford, which comprised a research project in digital image processing of satellite images in C.
Iain also has substantial industrial research experience. At Imperial College London and the National Engineering Laboratory, as part of a team, he successfully utilised industrial instrumentation, nuclear electronics and computing as applied to oil and gas flow pipelines for a consortium of the World's largest oil and gas companies.
Iain is a representative before the European Patent Office (EPO), the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Iain’s practice encompasses the whole range of intellectual property rights, both in the UK and internationally. His practice thus covers patents, designs, trade marks and copyright in terms of both protection and enforcement.
For patents, Iain is experienced in the fields of mechanical engineering, instrumentation, physics, medical physics, computer and internet related inventions and electronics, digital image processing, speech recognition and also handles general electrical/mechanical work. Iain has acquired substantial experience in acting for an international client base including industry and universities in the UK and the US, and also for the responsible handling of large patent portfolios such as, for example, the European patent portfolio of a leading Japanese electronics and computing corporation.
Iain also has other substantial patent experience in fields such as medical imaging and devices, photovoltaic (solar) cells, food products and containers, gas & oil boilers, tax software, automotive engineering, bicycle and cycling components/accessories, sports devices, consumer products and biosensors.
Iain has substantial trade marks experience in UK, European and international trade matters acting for numerous clients such as a leading UK mineral water supplier and a domestic home appliance manufacturer. His experience includes managing the worldwide trade marks portfolio of a well-known British consumer electronics and durables manufacturer.
Iain is also experienced in the securing and enforcement of registered and unregistered design rights, in the UK, and abroad.
Iain is a Chartered Physicist (CPhys) and a Member of the Institute of Physics (MInstP).
