The Madrid Protocol on international registration of trade marks came into force in India on July 08, 2013, three months after the country signed the Treaty.

In 2012, WIPO handled a record number of Madrid applications: 44,018.

Countries expected to join the system within the next two years includes Columbia, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia and Thailand.
