Jon joined Franks and Co in January 2009 having previously worked with T M Gregory & Co since April 2000. He has 20 years' experience in general patent and trade mark agency, covering a wide range of applied mechanical and chemical technologies, extending across the full range of intellectual property including patents, designs, trade marks, copyright, licensing and enforcement..

Technical

Jon read Natural Sciences at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, specialising in Chemistry. He took his PhD in Inorganic/Organometallic Chemistry, also at the University of Cambridge.

Jon worked in the R & D laboratories of the ICI subsidiary, Tioxide Group, for seventeen years, carrying out research and development in areas such as inorganic and organic pigment technology, process technology, polymerisation and polymer properties, paints and other coatings, paper, inks, particle size determination, colloid science, colour science, optical theory and diversification, as well as being responsible for new idea evaluation, gatekeeping between R & D and in-house patent attorneys, and defence-related projects. Jon was named as inventor on numerous patents in the UK and overseas.

Professional

Jon is a representative before the UK Patent Office, the UK Trade Marks Registry, the UK Designs Registry, the European Patent Office, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). Jon conducts litigation before the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court.

In the field of patents, Jon has particular experience in technologies including medical and surgical equipment, ultrasound, safety and security devices, industrial process equipment, biocides and disinfectants, medical compositions, laboratory equipment, kitchen and household equipment, construction technologies, footwear and hand tools. He is skilled in the rapid assimilation of specialist technologies. Jon has conducted Opposition Hearings and Appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.

For trade marks, Jon has 20 years' experience in the filing and prosecution of UK, European, and foreign trade mark applications for businesses in multiple market sectors, and including unconventional trade marks. Jon has personally conducted numerous ex-parte and Opposition hearings before the UK Trade Marks Registry.

Jon is also active in the securing and enforcement of registered and unregistered design rights, in the UK and abroad. He specialises in resolving the distinct requirements of US and UK/European design law and practice.

Jon was one of the first attorneys to pass the modern Intellectual Property Enterprise Court litigation course.

Jon is an active member of the Trade Marks Committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys.
